Micky Dolenz Sings R.E.M. EP Out Today; Special Events in Athens

It promises to be a banner day in Athens today: Micky Dolenz (The Monkees) has a brand new EP out called “Dolenz Sings R.E.M.” which features fresh and completely new arrangements of some of the band’s most memorable songs: “Shiny Happy People,” “Radio Free Europe,” “Man On The Moon,” and “Leaving New York.”

To coincide with the EP release, Wuxtry Records-Athens, where Peter and Michael first met, is hosting an in-store event at which Micky will be signing copies pre-ordered by fans. Fittingly, Micky is also being presented with the Key to the City by Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz.

As Dolenz says: “Once again, this EP reaffirms my long-held conviction that a solid recording always begins with solid material. You don’t get much more solid than R.E.M. What a joy to sing these classics and honor a team of outstanding writers.”

“I’ve been listening to Micky’s singing since I was nine years old,” Peter Buck said. “It’s unreal to hear that very voice, adding new depth to songs we’ve written ourselves, and inhabiting them so completely.” Michael adds, “These songs are ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. Micky Dolenz covering R.E.M. Monkees style, I have died and gone to heaven. This is really something.”

“That voice—one of the main voices of my musical awakening—singing our songs… It is beyond awesome,” said Mike Mills. “Let’s help make this as huge as we possibly can. I am beyond thrilled.”

Congrats, Micky. We’ve all been fans of yours for a long time and appreciate the tribute.
