On this day (December 2) in 1996, R.E.M. released the third single from New Adventures in Hi-Fi, album closer “Electrolite.” In the liner notes for #NewAdventures25, Michael reflects on how the song almost didn’t end up on the album, recalling “I didn’t think it was good enough. I thought it was simplistic and obvious, and I didn’t see the beauty or the poetry in it. And of course later I realized what an astonishing song it is. But it took me a while to come around to that.”
