POSTCARD AFTER A FEW DAYS OFF IN CAPE TOWN

We have all enjoyed our several days here. Two tremendous shows in front of some of the most enthusiastic, raucous crowds R.E.M. has ever seen (and heard); On Saturday night, the staccato clapping part during the bridge, where the audience mimics the sounds on stage, literally was louder than the amplified sounds coming from the stage…pretty wild! And it has been fun to get to spend more than a day in one place…unpack bags, get to know some streets and places and people…and what a great place to do that, we have been treated and feted and fed and spoiled by some gracious hosts, wonderful food and an enchanting, captivating city that seems unlike any other I have ever seen. Many of us have exercised a lot, all have rested up (needed) and best I can tell, we have all enjoyed the sights, food and people of this special place; something tells me we will be back someday…

But tomorrow we go to Durban, then to Johannesburg and by Sunday night we will be in Tokyo, back in winter, so the frenzied pace will resume soon enough, but the unhurried, Cape-style break here has been a perfect tonic to the experiences of the last couple of months in Europe.

Here is a review of Cape Town 1 that captures the performance particularly well.

Onward…
