PETER PRODUCES PAGING MR. PROUST

Twin Cities alt-country legends The Jayhawks have a new album out called PAGING MR. PROUST produced by our very own Peter Buck with co-conspirators Gary Louris & Tucker Martine (who R.E.M. fans will remember did some of the early demos for Accelerate).

“I’ve just had an exciting couple of weeks working with Tucker Martine on the new record by The Jayhawks which is a stunning tour de force,” Peter said after the recording process.  “I think it will blow a lot of minds. I spent yesterday with my good friend Mike, who came to town to add some Millsian glamour to the proceedings.”

PAGING MR. PROUST is available on Sham.

FLASHBACK:
THE DAY OUT OF TIME WENT TO #1

May 18, 1991: R.E.M.’s watershed album OUT OF TIME went to #1 on the BILLBOARD Magazine album charts.  It was the band’s first #1 album and featured the smash single “Losing My Religion” in addition to other hits.

The album, which remained on the charts for 109 weeks, won three Grammys–one for Best Alternative Music Album and two for “Losing My Religion.” OUT OF TIME went on to sell more than twenty million albums worldwide.

But this was the day that the album, and the band, first ascended to the top of the charts.  The news of this milestone reached Athens by landline telephone on a Tuesday night while R.E.M.’s singer Michael Stipe was at City Hall attending a packed Commission meeting on a local planning and zoning matter of some import. When a friend and neighbor came to deliver the news, a noticeable buzz and excitement spread throughout the room.

The hometown boys continued to do well, both locally and nationally… which went on for a while!
