Here are a few items of special interest we’ve rounded up for the mid-point of February:
PATTERSON HOOD
Check out this nice piece on our friend Patterson Hood at No Depression.
And speaking of Patterson, he will be on NPR’s venerable program Mountain Stage in the very near future. He’s being taped along with Van Dyke Parks and others at the UGA Performing Arts Center this Sunday night, February 19th, on the UGA Campus at Hodgson Hall.
Also, our friend Jim Desmond has posted some comments on the anti-big box development song “After It’s Gone” released by Patterson Hood and the Downtown 13 a couple of weeks ago. Read Jim’s thoughts at his blog whenyoumotoraway.blogspot.com. Video below:
BIG STAR AND BERTIS AT SXSW
The upcoming SXSW festival will feature our very own Bertis Downs on a panel called “Pennies From the Celestial Jukebox” on March 16th from 2:00PM to 3:00PM. SXSW describes the panel as follows:
At long last music subscription services are gaining listeners and revenue. Where does the money come from and where does it go? How can artists keep track of this income? What impact do label deals have on this issue? Many questions remain on the table as the services seek to solidify their audience.

Also, if you attend this year’s SXSW, be sure to check out Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me, which will screen at the film festival:
A feature-length documentary about legendary Memphis band Big Star. While mainstream success eluded them, Big Star’s three albums have become critically lauded touchstones of the rock music canon. A seminal band in the history of alternative music, Big Star has been cited as an influence by artists including REM, The Replacements, Belle & Sebastian, Elliot Smith and Flaming Lips, to name just a few. With never-before-seen footage and photos of the band, in-depth interviews and a rousing musical tribute by the bands they inspired, BIG STAR: NOTHING CAN HURT ME is a story of artistic and musical salvation.

FABLES FROM MY RECONSTRUCTION
Here’s an interesting personal tale from Eric Nuzum called “Fables of My Reconstruction” posted at his blog.
UNDER THE RADAR
In case you haven’t seen it, Under The Radar has a feature on the band in their Best Of 2011 magazine. R.E.M. is listed as one of the groups which “made a splash” in 2011. More here!
