WEEKEND ROUNDUP: REMEMBERING BILL DOSS, ANOTHER LANDMARK UNDER THREAT, AND THE FUTURE OF MUSIC

A memorial service will be held this Saturday at 2pm at the 40 Watt in Athens, Georgia, to celebrate and recall the life of a remarkable friend and musician, Bill Doss, who many will remember as a founding member of Athens psychedelic pop stalwarts Olivia Tremor Control. Bill, who passed away unexpectedly this week at the young age of 43, leaves behind a legacy of great music that touched people all over the world. We are deeply saddened by Bill’s passing and will keep memories of him in a special place in our hearts.

ATHENS LANDMARK UNDER THREAT

One of the Classic City’s most beloved landmarks, Legion Pool, where many of us saw R.E.M. perform in the early days is currently under threat for demolition. Not only is the pool of historical importance to Athens and the University of Georgia, but it is also a source of great community pride and interaction where students, adults, and children all escape the oppressive Georgia heat and recreate. Read more about the cause to save Legion Pool, check out a video made by Friends of Legion Pool, and visit their Facebook page for more information.

THE GREAT BEYOND

R.E.M.’S highest charting single in the UK, The Great Beyond gets some props.
