The video was created by CRUSH â a cutting edge graphic-design and production studio based in Toronto. âWe loved what Michael Stipe said about the meaning behind the lyrics of âHollow Man,ââ says Gary Thomas, Crushâs founding partner and creative director. âWe all fear losing who we are, so we wanted to build on the idea of isolation as our theme. In terms of style, we took a page from Michaelâs approach to writing and recording the new record, so a modern approach to the âpunkâ aesthetic was used. Consequently, our devices emerged and the âHollow Manâ became three people: a digital avatar, a roughly drawn representation, and live action.â
