R.E.M. is the number one American band of all time according to a poll conducted by music site Weeping Elvis. Criteria included such things as influence on other artists, breaking new musical ground, creating a unique sound, genre or movement, longevity, and the insistence that the band must be a “true” band or group of musicians that created a body of work. The panel of judges included the site’s editorial board as well as a combination of twenty Weeping Elvis contributors, entertainment executives, and music industry professionals.
